Free Writing School opens.

It is located in a building on the north side of today’s Court Street near Scollay Square. The first free public school in Boston, its purpose is “for the teaching of children to write and cipher.” to read and write. John Cole is the first headmaster. The school is expanded in 1715 and 1753, and closes in 1790.
